We know you've always wanted a pet dog, cat, bunny, or other awesome animal. And now's the time friends! We are here to help you get ready for your new family member as soon as you're ready. Owning an animal is, after all, one of the most gratifying things you will do.
BallroomBarks Executive Director Bonnie Diaz adopted Little Gabriel, who was rescued from being badly abused, traumatized, exhibited severe anxiety and medical issues which ended up in a ruptured disc causing paralysis from the waste down. We quickly got him to the animal hospital where they performed emergency surgery removing three discs and fusing his spine. After a month of bed rest he made an amazing recovery, and has now fully recovered. He loves Central Park and patrolling his new Chelsea neighborhood keeping it safe and secure. Little Gabriel takes his job very seriously and is devoted to BallroomBarks! by helping animals all over the world. See his video at https://youtu.be/tg_sQfhmwcQ. BTW, Ms. Diaz will confirm he actually "rescued" her.

Rico is a male Chihuahua mix who was being held in a cage in a cellar in the dangerous area of East New York. Honorably discharged Navy vet Jon Frank, Jr., an employee of Ballroom Barks! who has served many tours overseas as well as the Middle East, bravely entered the area and negotiated Rico out who was being slated for “Pit Bull” bait. Rico now has a forever home with his new “Daddy” Jon! Rico serves as a sort of mascot for Ballroom Barks! and is shown wearing his custom Tails Tux, made by the amazing Kristina Staykova.

Petey
Rescued by Jon Frank, Jr., and Bonnie Diaz. Petey was one of the first animals helped by Ballroom Barks! and brought so much joy to everyone he met. Sadly, Petey left us too soon when he was hit by a car. He still serves as a reminder of the work we must continue to do to improve the lives of all animals in need. |
Chaplin
Rescued from the back room of a pet store by Isaac Dayley and his partner. He had broken his back leg at 2 months old and was living in a small cage. Thanks to Ballroom Barks! Chaplin received all of the care he needed and is a happy and healthy pup with lots of love and energy |
Sandi-Cherie
Rescued by Patti Panebianco with Ballroom Barks! |
Mickey is completely blind so Ballroom Barks! contributed to his medical care.

Early August 2013, our beloved Foxy Lady, a three-year-old Doberman, developed a limp in her hind left leg. Our family thought at first that it was a pulled muscle. Foxy plays all the time, and sometimes a little too rambunctious with her brother Leo, a Pomeranian. After a week of limping, Foxy starting whining/crying at night and moving less. She no longer enjoyed her daily walks. Her family reached out to Ballroom Barks! for advice.
A miracle happened! Foxy was sent to a wonderful care center called “Animal General”. They examined every part of Foxy’s legs and hips. They discovered an ACL issue in her knee. With the financial and emotional help of Ballroom Barks!, Foxy’s Forever Angel surgery was performed on September 10, 2013. Recovery is still ongoing, and it is hard work for Foxy. Today, Foxy is getting stronger each day, hardly ever cries and once again plays with her brother Leo. We still do therapy and she still has a limp, but every day we think our Angels and friends at Ballroom Barks!. |
Pet Tips
Avoid Breeders & Puppy Mills:
This type of pet source is usually how Pet Stores get their animals. They are notorious for terrible breeding conditions which are known to include being unsanitary, inbreeding and cruelty to animals. Plus this a very expensive pet source option.
Animal Care & Control Centers:
Unfortunately these are also known as Kill Shelters if an animal is not adopted after a set amount of time, depending on how many the shelter can care for. However this is an excellent place to start as these pets after being adopted are given all the necessary medical attention and shots along with a “starter kit” which usually includes a collar with leash, food and food dish, etc. So start by checking your local Animal Care & Control Centers website.
Also, these Animal Care & Control Centers always need donations of money, freshly cleaned supplies such as towels, blankets, unopened pet food, toys, etc. So please do not hesitate to donate, which is also tax deductible.
Make sure your pet is licensed and up to date with vaccines, and special vaccines required for city pets.
After returning home with your pet, use Pet Wipes to wipe their paws.
Brush your pets teeth daily. “Healthy Mouth” makes a toothpaste and a water additive.
Regular baths and Flea & Tick prevention measures as prescribed by your veterinarian.
